Built on a house of cards

We have spent years in the coffee industry building businesses on a race to the bottom, across the entire supply chain.

Undercut the competitor, offer more equipment, chase volume, bring in cash flow and tell ourselves we’ll figure out the profit later.

Instead of building resilient businesses on a solid foundation, we have built houses of cards.

And we haven’t just built one or two of them. We’ve built entire cities of coffee businesses on razor-thin margins, weak pricing models, and the hope that tomorrow’s revenue will cover today’s obligations.

Now the global economy is shaking those cities.

Consumers are under pressure. Logistics remain expensive. FX volatility is hurting businesses. Labour costs are rising. Delays are forcing roasters to buy more expensive spot coffee and farmers more expensive inputs. All without a clue what tomorrow brings.

These are all layers of what we’ve been calling the coffee crisis at Map It Forward for the last few years.

And I don’t think the real earthquake has arrived yet.
