Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan — also known as Bacha Khan and The Frontier Gandhi — was one of the most powerful voices of peace, justice, and non-violence in the Indian freedom struggle.
Unlike the stereotype of the warrior Pashtun tribes, he chose a path no one expected — the path of education, compassion, and nonviolent resistance.

Born in 1890 in the Pashtun region near Peshawar, he witnessed poverty, inequality, and oppression from a young age. Instead of picking up a weapon, he picked up a dream —
to awaken his people through knowledge and unity.

He founded the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement, the world’s largest non-violent Muslim organization, and mobilized thousands of Pashtuns to fight injustice without raising a single weapon. His courage and leadership made even the British fear him — not because he fought with swords, but because he changed hearts.

He was imprisoned multiple times by both the British and later the Pakistani government because he demanded autonomy, dignity, and rights for Pashtuns. Even after independence, he continued to struggle for peace, justice, and unity.

In 1984 and 1985, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifelong commitment to nonviolence.

When he died in 1988, people from all religions — Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs — and from across the world joined his funeral. His farewell showed what his life proved:
