The game is set in 16th century Japan, towards the end of the Sengoku period. It focuses on the millennium-long struggle between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who fight for peace and freedom, and the Templar Order, who seek peace through control. The story is told from the perspective of two main characters: Fujibayashi Naoe, a skilled kunoichi (female ninja) from the Iga province, and Yasuke, a powerful African samurai.
