Shipbreaking - Flinders Bay goes to Alang beach

From what is generally acknowledged to be the first build of fully cellular container ships over 1000 teu, the first of the class to go to scrap at Alang breakers in India. 4 of the 5 sister ships had been re-engined to more economical diesel engines but the Flinders remained as steam turbine to the end. The 6th ship of the class, the Jervis Bay had been previously lost during a storm on Bilboa breakwater whilst undertow to the breakers.

Beached October 1996 Alang
Built for the Europe to Australia and later also New Zealand trades, the ship spent all her life back and forth on these runs.
