When Someone Says Runners Don’t Need to Strength Train..

Why running is never just running

Did you know we use at least 99 muscles when running?? Just reading that sentence you may think that we can probably just strengthen our body with running alone. However, the reality is that running is a complex activity that requires several different sequences of muscle contractions which requires strength in a variety of different areas.

A lack of strength in the larger muscle groups needed to run like the hips, back, glutes, core, hamstrings, quads & calves, typically results in injury. Muscular imbalances create a reliance on muscles unable to carry the load. When they become overloaded, the bones, joints, tendons, and other smaller muscles take on the added stress.

Another point to consider is that running is a much higher impact sport than many of the other endurance sports like cycling & swimming. This can put the bones at higher risk for fracture, BUT lifting can be beneficial in not only strengthening muscles but bones as well. Including some weight training with your running could keep the bone injuries at bay as well.

Many activities that we do each day also create imbalances on their own. For instance - sitting at a desk all day or binging Netflix sitting on the couch, creates a lengthening of the muscles in the back while shortening the hip flexors. This shortening can cause hip tightness which can then cause back pain.

While it may be easier to focus all your time on running, cutting a few miles a week to make time for strength can pay off big time!
