Ostinatum

My new album, ‘Provenance’, a spanning 20 track ode to American landforms is coming out later this year, and you can stream the first single ‘Ostinatum’ now.

Each track was inspired deeply by an American place and feeling, distilled through the perspective of an ensemble made up of strings, bari sax, marimba, piano, harp, mandolin, and electronics.

Ostinatum is a flight from the city, I imagined whizzing across George Washington bridge, the tall buildings folding in the distance amidst the slurry haze of an endless summer. Exuberant perpetual chaos.

Ostinatum explores the idea of momentum, sustained through the use of contrasting duple vs triples throughout. The strings bolster this idea by each player independently playing their own weight to constant subdivided fast notes, adding their own accents to either 2s or 3s, so that the entire mass of the string sound shifts your perspective depending on you how you choose to hear/feel the rhythm, a sort of sonic Penrose staircase.
