Bald and Bankrupt in local news

rough translation of the news follows:

Recently, the popular British millionaire video blogger Benjamin Rich visited the Tondi district of Tallinn and called it incredibly dull and uninteresting. The film crew of "Aktuaalne kaamera +" went on a tour of Tondi and was convinced of the opposite.

The British travel blogger was inspired to visit the unknown Tondi by a retro tram: enchanted by its design, Benjamin Rich decided to randomly drive to the final stop.

"Look at the beautiful Tondi! There is absolutely nothing here! Nothing is happening in Tondi. We saw him! I think it's time to go back," Rich said.

And now the whole world will think that Tondi is some kind of hole in which there is absolutely nothing to do and absolutely nothing to look at? "AK +" was sincerely indignant and invited the local historian Yosef Katz to correct the situation and show, maybe, there are some hidden gems of Tondi.

"The fact is that the train and tram stops are not in Tondi at all, but on the outskirts of Kitseküla," Katz said.

The name of the district "Tondi" does not come from the Estonian word 'tont', as many believe, and has nothing to do with evil spirits.

Tondi is an Estonian derivative of Dunte, the surname of the merchant family who owned the Duntenhof country estate here.

And now for a later story. The architectural dominant of the area is the amazingly beautiful complex of barracks on Tondi Street.

“The complex that we see here is the year 1912-1914, as we know, not only in the internal policy of the Russian Empire, the colors began to thicken, but also in the external one. It became obvious that the Baltic Sea will not do without a military conflict in the near future. And it was decided to build an artillery barracks, "the local historian explained.

In the twentieth century, these buildings managed to serve all the armies that ended up in Estonia. In 1918, the army of Kaiser's Germany was housed here, later the military school of the Republic of Estonia, then part of the Soviet army.

Opposite the barracks there is a monument, which is popularly nicknamed Tondi poissid - Tondi boys or boys, in memory of the cadets who died on December 1, 1924 during the communist uprising. The sculptor is Amandus Adamson himself, the author of the beloved "Mermaid" in Pirita.

"A group of militants burst into the premises of a military school. Cadets and future officers slept here, a shootout broke out, and four future officers of the Estonian army were killed," the local historian explained.

The Soviet authorities destroyed the monument in the early forties, and only in 2009 an exact copy of it was installed here.

A little diagonally from the barracks there is a small park - this is all that remains of a summer estate built in the middle of the 18th century by Jobst Dunte.

"In general, the surname Dunte is very interesting, this same Jobst Dunte was a second cousin of Jacobina von Dunten, the wife of that same Munchausen. When you go to Riga from Tallinn, in the town of Duntes there is a Museum of Munchausen, this is exactly the same Duntens, only the Riga branch ", - said Katz.

However, in Tondi there is still one, albeit small, but perfectly preserved manor of the 18th century - Springtal, or the Valley of Streams. There is a sundial and a high fence that protected not from enemies, but from natural factors.

"After all, there were sand dunes, journalists at the beginning of the 20th century called this place the Revel Sahara. So that the path in the park would not be swept by a strong wind, and a tall wall was built that once surrounded the entire manor park," explained the local historian.
