Plug-Side Chat: It's Time to Ditch the "80% Complete" Metric

It seems that automakers and charging providers have gotten locked into a "charging to 80%" outlook, where they subtly indicate that the driver should be charging to 80% during each charge session. This makes for less convenient trips, increases the load on the public charging infrastructure, and increases the costs of driving an EV.

I think that a much better metric would listing the "subsequent charge range" (SCR) for each EV individually. As a basic definition, I would recommend the cutoff being the point at which that EV's DC fast charging rate drops below half of its peak charging rate.

This SCR metric can be used to let drivers know the point at which it is no longer beneficial to continue charging, and it (in combination with other metrics such as peak charging rate and range) can be used by EV consumers to cross shop and focus on the EVs that best suit their travel preferences.
