Halyna Skipalska: The Halfway house in Kyiv

Halyna Skipalska, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health and Country Director of the HealthRight International in Ukraine.
In 2019, the HealthRight and Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health helped more than 28,000 women, men and children through a wide range of programs. The majority of our clients are victims of gender-based violence.

The Halfway house in Kyiv was used as a model for 10 shelters for women, who are GBV-survivors, in 8 regions of Ukraine, created in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine and local partners. In seven years, 75 new mothers and pregnant women in difficult life circumstances, mainly due to violence, have found a shelter here.

Why is this important, especially today?

Because the Covid-19 pandemic has only worsened the situation with domestic and gender-based violence. The level of aggression and number of conflicts in families is growing. The number of reports of violence in Ukraine has increased by forty percent.
