Das Lied Heil dir im Siegerkranz war von 1795 bis 1871 die preußische Volkshymne. Nach der Gründung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches 1871 wurde das Lied zur Kaiserhymne. Sie erklang bei patriotischen Gelegenheiten mit Bezug zum Kaiser, wie Thronjubiläen und Geburts- und Todestagen, gewöhnlich aber auch zu Anlässen wie dem Sedantag und zu den Reichsgründungsfeiern. Eine Nationalhymne im heutigen Sinne war es nicht, was insbesondere auf den bundesstaatlichen Aufbau des Deutschen Reichs zurückzuführen war. Vielmehr war es eines unter mehreren inoffiziellen oder halboffiziellen zu derartigen Anlässen angestimmten Liedern wie beispielsweise auch der Wacht am Rhein. Insbesondere die süddeutschen Staaten standen dem Lied skeptisch gegenüber.

Before the foundation of the Empire, it had been the royal anthem of Prussia since 1795 and remained it after 1871. The melody of the hymn derived from the British anthem "God Save the King". For these reasons, the song failed to become popular within all of Germany. Not only did it fail to win the support of most German nationalists, it was never recognized by the southern German states, such as Bavaria or Württemberg. After World War I, the German Empire came to an end and "Das Lied der Deutschen" became the national anthem of the Weimar Republic.

Le chant Heil dir im Siegerkranz, de 1871 à 1918, était l'hymne non officiel de l'Empire allemand. Le texte avait été écrit par Heinrich Harries le 27 janvier 1790 sur la musique du God Save the Queen elle-même tirée de Grand Dieu sauve le Roy de Mme de Brinnon en 1686 pour l'anniversaire du roi du Danemark Christian VII.
Le texte se réfère à la guerre de coalition contre les armées révolutionnaires françaises. Lorsque l'Empire allemand fut mis en place « Kaiser » (empereur) remplaça « König » (signifiant roi).

Heil dir im Siergranz foi, de 1871 a 1918, o hino nacional Monárquico Imperial do Império Alemão, sendo oficial, mas não o "popular", que era o também oficial "Deutschlandlied", também conhecido como Deuschland Über Alles. Antes havia sido o hino da Prússia, e a melodia do hino deriva do hino britânico "God Save the Queen"(Deus salve a Rainha).

Heil dir im Siegerkranz fue desde 1871 hasta 1918 uno de los tres himnos nacionales no oficiales del Imperio alemán. No fue un himno nacional en el sentido como lo entendemos hoy en día, fue más bien un himno imperial.
Por dos razones, esta canción no fue popular en todo el imperio: la primera fue que no fue bien acogida por círculos nacionalistas alemanes ni por los Estados del sur de Alemania, como Baviera, pues compartía la melodía con el himno británico God save the Queen, y la segunda razón es porque después de la Primera Guerra Mundial el Imperio alemán colapsó. Heil dir im Siegerkranz terminó siendo sustituido por el popular himno Das Lied der Deutschen que al final se convirtió en el himno oficial de la República de Weimar.
