Enhancing NDC Ambition through Article 6 Cooperation in Africa. Nordic Approaches to Redesigning Global Carbon Market Cooperation under The Paris Agreement.

The event presents and discusses key features of the Nordic Initiative for Cooperative Approaches (NICA), that was launched in collaboration between Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (Nefco) and the Nordic Council of Ministers to contribute to the operationalization of Article 6, building on the success of the Nordic-funded Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) project in Peru. The side event discusses how Article 6 cooperation between NICA and partner countries in Africa can enable Article 6 activities that both enhance mutual NDC ambition as well as promoting sustainable development.

The workshop will present NICA’s approach and focus in particular on key opportunities for cooperation with Article 6 host countries, presenting ongoing initiatives in the Energy Sector in Uganda. The side event also discusses how Nordic-led Article 6 piloting cooperation can contribute to generating practical experience that helps overcome some of the unresolved issues concerning multilateral rules for carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, emphasizing important objectives such as environmental integrity and sustainable development. Stephan Hoch, our Managing Director, will participate as a speaker in this event.

This event is organized by NICA and Perspectives Climate Group. Partner organisations include Eastern African Aliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance, Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) Uganda, Swedish Energy Agency (SEA).
