Mario Filippeschi (1907-1979) was certainly one of Italy's outstanding tenors. He sang extensively in Italy, Spain, and Latin America. Because he did not sing outside the Latin world, his name is less well known in the United States, but in Italy he was, and is, considered as one of the very best. His brilliant upper register made it possible for him to do leading roles in operas not commonly done during his time, such as William Tell and I Puritani. His repertoire was extensive.
