Putting the X2 through its paces

After about a month this patient has put a lot of miles on his Ottobock X2 which is a relative of the Ottobock Genium for service members. Watch and see how adaptable this knee is! From walking backward to running on a treadmill this truly is the most versatile Prosthetic knee available today!

The X2 technology is the result of collaboration between the U.S. military and Plymouth, Minnesota-based Ottobock, the world's largest prosthetic and orthotic manufacturer.
The goal was to develop a more robust, durable, and intuitive prosthetic leg to help injured service members with above knee amputations return to normal activities of daily living, as well as active duty if they desired. Setting the X2 apart is its microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee joint that utilizes a complex sensory system and sophisticated rule sets that offer a gait closer to natural human motion and which greatly reduces the differences between the body's natural abilities and artificial replacements.

The X2's multiple environmental inputs include:
*An accelerometer to measure changing speed and direction of movement and a gyroscope that is able to intelligently and intuitively tell where the user's leg is in space. These are the same technologies used in Wii™ gaming systems to react to the player's movements and the same used in phones and cameras that adjust the image on those screens when the devices change position.

The result is expanded physical movement with greater security, as well as:
*Added versatility and functionality for the real world such as running, and walking backwards,
*Crossing obstacles in a more anatomically correct way (instead of taking extra steps to avoid them),
*Climbing stairs step-over-step without massive compensating movement -- an action that previously appeared impossible for those with above knee limb loss.
*The X2 also has available five programmable activity modes (for job tasks, biking, golfing, etc.) and is splash-water resistant.
