Reopening Northern Colorado - Episode #1 - Road Recon

After the devastating Cameron Peak Fire moved through Colorado for months on end last year (August to about November 2020), I had an idea. I wanted to get Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery partnered up with the Canyon Lakes Ranger District / USFS to get these trails repaired and reopened.

After a few months of back and forth with the Forest Service, we have our scope of work in place and signatures on paper!! September 25th and 26th the first round of Trail Recon Missions was underway.

Storm Mountain 128/153 was checked to the summit from Galuchie Park. And 153 was also checked from the Masonville side. I flew the drone over parts of the trails that I could access, and we surveyed Moody Hill 513/132, Crystal Mountain 344, Old ballard 129 and West Greer 154C, along with the other segment of Greer along 407, 154, 154A, 154B.

There is a tremendous amount of work to be done on some of these trails, which is why they are still closed. This team I've put together is a small group from inside of Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery, and I'm very hopeful to get work started on these trails VERY soon. The more we can get done before the snow flies, the less there is to do next year.
