Adimalathura Beach is the place to go for a quiet visit to the beach. For tourists, this area is just known for Azhuvedic treatment resorts, but we went there and the beach is clean because and not crowded because of the resorts. Nobody is trying to sell you anything and it's so beautiful with the palms and greenery next to the beach, furthermore with local farming and cows in between, not to forget the local feeling you get when you see all the fishermen take their boats in the evening for night fishing. There is a seafood restaurant at the place, where you can meet this really friendly man called Raveendran (Joseph), a former tourist guide who had enough of the buzzing at Kovalam. His food is good and his staff so friendly and local.

Aazhimala...!

Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ may prove wrong once you reach Azhimala. Unperturbed by the din and bustle of the city, in an idyllic setting, the demure charm of Azhimala can win any heart in quick seconds. The beach is a seven-kilometer drive from Kovalam, where you will find gentle waves embracing huge rocks. The best definition for the seashore is ‘simply natural’, as in one single glance you would notice that its beauty is not hampered by any means and it exists as natural as possible. Make careful footsteps on the huge rocks near the sea since they have turned slippery due to the constant interaction with waves.

Taking the steep road leading to the Azhimala Siva Temple, we reached in front of the temple and parked the car nearby. Even while standing there, the humming of sea waves tempted us to hurry along the shady route beside the temple that leads to the seashore. The drizzle in the wee-hours has kept the sandy paths wet, imparting a rustic charm to the environs on the whole. As you move along this path, the chimes from the temple begin to fade and the sound of waves turns louder.

It was a pleasant morning and on the seashore, one could see the fisherfolk readying for their routine. Lined up in a single row, the way they pull back the fishing net makes a delightful sight. Another impressive sight is the row of huts atop the cliffs which add to the beauty of the seashore. You will also find thorny shrubs growing on rocks and thick vegetation in the area surrounding the beach. Azhimala beach is a peaceful getaway, a place definitely worth a visit.

It is a small temple located 20 kms from Airport. The Adjoining beach and the ambiance make up for the size of the temple. The premise is very clean. A separate sea-view area is constructed adjacent to the temple. The view is pristine. The adjoining beach can be accessed by a small walk on a narrow path (Not for elderly persons 70+). You can sit on the rocks and have a scenic view or play on the beach sands. Many resorts are there around the temple. So you may find many foreigners visiting the temple. Not suggested if you plan to visit or stay after 6.30PM. Mostly it will be dark after 6.30pm and not much light facilities. Ample parking space for cars. Public transport is available from Trivandrum East Fort bus stand.

My Observations...!

Just a short drive from Kovalam is the much quieter, laid back Azhimala Beach. Compared to the hustle and bustle along the coast this is a wonderfully peaceful and natural location.
Gentle waves wash the long stretch of golden sand, and the backdrop is coconut palm trees with the odd cluster of boulders. Instead of a throng of tourists, you can watch the local fishermen landing their catch.
Azhimala Beach provides a great getaway from hectic Trivandrum city and a pristine alternative to the seaside resort of Kovalam.
Overlooking the beach is the Azhimala Siva Temple, a great spot for taking in the sunset.
