Deceptor - C64

I remember finding Deceptor at the B. Dalton bookstore in West L.A.—yeah, a bookstore. And I must’ve caught it at the right price, because I convinced my mom to buy it for me. The box art looked promising, so I was pretty hyped to get home and boot it up.

LOAD "*",8,1—and I was not disappointed.

The game starts with a comic book–style intro that absolutely rules. Total '80s sci-fi vibes. Then you’re thrown into these trippy, orthogonal levels full of geometric weirdness. You morph between a hover sled, a flying craft, and—at the end of each level—an armored humanoid to take on the boss.

It’s got real physics baked in too, which makes the puzzles more interesting and more frustrating. The graphics are stunning for a C64 game, the gameplay is intuitive, and the sound effects? Chef’s kiss. I still remember exactly how they sounded—and I still get that rush of '80s bedroom nostalgia whenever I hear them.

It’s also hard. Like throw-the-joystick-across-the-room hard. There are no checkpoints, no forgiveness, just good old-fashioned 8-bit rage. But I kept coming back, because Deceptor is just that good.

Released by Avantage in 1987, it’s a game that a lot of people missed, but one I’ve never forgotten. Wild, weird, and still worth playing.
