Studies suggest the inner core’s rotation can vary relative to Earth’s surface and may periodically slow or reverse direction. Deep inside the mantle, two enormous regions—called Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces—span continent-sized areas beneath Africa and the Pacific. And the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest humans have ever drilled, reached just ~12 km—about 0.2% of the distance to Earth’s center—before extreme heat halted progress.
