California's Assembly Public Safety Committee holds first hearing under new leader

A California committee tasked with making decisions that impacts public safety and the criminal justice system had its first hearing Tuesday under new leadership, which signaled a shift in how California lawmakers may approach the issues this year. The Assembly Public Safety committee last year made a series of decisions that pushed Assembly leaders to completely shake up the group and remove its chairman, Assemblyman Reggie-Jones Sawyer. The group's new chairman is Sacramento Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty.
