Frankenstein Part 523: Walton Trapped in the Ice Reaches for Seneca

The date shift is quiet but seismic. Walton is no longer the observer of someone else's catastrophe — he is inside his own. The mountains of ice that crushed Victor's pursuit now threaten the ship itself, and the men who trusted Walton's vision look to him for a salvation he cannot provide. Shelley has been constructing this parallel across the entire novel: two ambitious men drawn northward by purposes larger than themselves, both discovering the cost of that draw too late to avoid it. Walton's invocation of Seneca is not mere stoicism — it is a man arranging himself for the possibility of death with the same composure Victor found in revenge. The frame and the story it contains have become the same story.
