Are Iris Scanning and Face ID Safe For Your Eyes?

Both Apple Face ID and Samsung Iris Scan technologies project infrared radiation on our face, and use an infrared camera to capture an image. So to answer the question of whether there is any harm to our eyes or skin, we need to look at the effects of infrared on our health.

Infrared is everywhere. The sun radiates Infrared, which we feel as heat. Our TV remotes use infrared to communicate information. Even our own body heat is emitted as infrared radiation.

That doesn't mean that infrared has no health effects. At incredibly high levels, infrared can harm your eyes and burn your skin.

It all boils down to the amount of exposure. While it is true that extreme exposure to infrared can have damaging effects, the amount of infrared that we get exposed to in day-to-day life doesn't cause harm. That's why authorities place limits on the amount of infrared that we are allowed to be exposed to from consumer electronics like mobile phones. Both Apple and Samsung have to receive certification that their products don't exceed the limits placed on infrared exposure.

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) specifies safe levels of infrared exposure. Below these thresholds, there is no known harm from infrared.
