Polish tango: Chór Dana - Co nam zostało z tych lat? 1930
Co nam zostało z tych lat? (What's been saved for us from all those years?) Tango z rewii teatru Qui pro Quo "Czysta Wyborowa" (from the Qui pro Quo theatre show "Czysta Wyborowa" [Pure Special Vodka]) Muz. Władysław Dan, Tekst: Oldlen (Julian Tuwim), Odeon 1930 (Polish)
NOTE: This is one of the nicest tangoes written during Polish Interbellum (1918-1939). Władysław Dan was one of the top Polish dance-music composers of that time and, together with such giants, as Jerzy Petersburski, Artur and Henryk Gold, Henryk Wars, Zygmunt Karasiński or Szymon Kataszek - was the creator of internationallly renowned music phenomenon called "the Polish tango". The male vocal group Chór Dana, which he organised in 1928 for the "Argentinian show" in the popular revue-theatre Qui pro Quo in Warsaw, quickly became the most beloved by thousands of fans Polish male vocal band. They also gave concerts in Germany, Italy, Soviet Russia, USA, often compared to such groups like The Revelers in America or Comedian harmonists in Germany.
The lyrics for this beautiful tango-ballade was written by one of the finest Polish poets of the 1st half of the 20th century, Julian Tuwim. He made writing cabaret hits the main source of his incomes, which quickly turned him into one of the richest poets in pre-war Poland.
However - with the tragic end of the Interbellum period (the Germano-Russian invasion on Poland in September 1939) and then - many years of nothing, but massacre of the best of the Polish and Jewish nations, which found its bloody climax in the Holocaust for the Jews, and the Polish genocide by the nazis as well as Soviet KGB & the Ukrainian UPA - meant also the end of that blend of the Polish and Jewish sentimentalities mixed into one and put into the Argentinian form of the tango rhythm - creating the explosive, fascinating, never-to-be-repeated musical specimen. Therefore, my photoshow is one more of my farewells; this time - to the Polish aristocracy, which - almost in 100 per cent - was either executed or forced to relinquish their historical seats in Poland - by the German and Russian barbarians of the 20th century. Most of the residences, looking so glamorous on the photoes, are today empty ruined shells, like Podhorce, or completely disappeared, like Smordwa or Moszków.
