We're celebrating Pride Month with a special performance of "Over the Rainbow" by the West Point Band's very own "Judy G," multi-talented bugler and vocalist Staff Sgt. Judy Gaunt, accompanied on guitar by Sgt. 1st Class Jongyoon Lee
“Over the Rainbow” is a well-loved song that has long been embedded in the fabric of the LGBTQ community. When Judy Garland first sang it in 1939, yearning for a more exciting and colorful life elsewhere, few might have predicted that her words would go on to inspire generations of people seeking a glimmer of hope and a land where, "The dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
Pride Month upholds the Department of Defense’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in all military branches, building a diverse force that represents the rich tapestry of our nation. Despite facing barriers, LGBTQ Soldiers have served with distinction throughout the Army’s history.
Since the repeal of the DOD’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, gay service members have been able to serve openly, with honor and integrity. In 2021, the DOD enacted the policy that no one would be denied entry into the Army, involuntarily separated, denied reenlistment or continuation of service, or subjected to adverse action or mistreatment based solely on gender identity.
Working toward an inclusive environment where all our team members are treated with dignity and respect is key in creating a faithful and dedicated force to accomplish the Army’s mission – we are #ProudToServe alongside each and every member of our #ArmyTeam!"
