From birth, the number of eggs declines steadily. By the time a girl reaches puberty, she has around 300,000 eggs, and throughout her reproductive years, only 400-500 eggs are used.

Granulosa cells in the ovaries produce, which indicates the egg reserve but not the egg quality. A normal AMH level is between 2-8 ng/ml. Low AMH, less than 1.5 ng/ml, suggests a diminished egg reserve. This could lead to early menopause if functional eggs are not available. Generally, AMH levels drop after age 40, indicating the onset of menopause or perimenopause.

AMH testing can be done any day of the menstrual cycle without fasting. It's an essential marker for ovarian aging and fertility treatments, guiding medication dosages and predicting the response to fertility drugs.
