Sugar - Copper Blue | Album Review: Is Bob Mould American Rock's Most Underrated Songwriter?

Copper Blue by Sugar is 'exhibit A' in the case for Bob Mould being American rock's most underrated songwriter. Whilst best known for his work with Husker Du, Bob Mould's output with Sugar (Copper Blue and Beaster, in particular) gave his songs a sonic clarity and explosiveness on record that they'd never had before.

This is the first episode in 20 / 20 Sound's series on Creation Records. Creation Records is, quite rightly, viewed as one of the greatest record labels of all time, but a lot of the attention the label gets is focussed on certain specific releases. There is a treasure trove of brilliant albums that label released which don't get the love that they deserve, and one of those is most definitely Sugar's Copper Blue.

From Helpless to Hoover Dam, A Good Idea to The Act We Act, Changes to If I Can't Change Your Mind, Copper Blue is one of '90s rock's most underrated albums. Husker Du are, understandably, the more exalted of the two groups, given the size of their back catalogue and given the influence they had and the influence of the bands that they influenced. But I don't think Husker Du ever produced an album as consistently good as Copper Blue. For me, it's an incredibly consistent slab of nigh-on perfect alternative rock.
