Israel to recall its envoys from Ireland, Norway, Spain for Palestinian state recognition

Ireland, Spain and Norway announced on Wednesday (May 22) that they would recognise a Palestinian state on May 28 and hoped other Western countries would follow suit, prompting an angry response from Israel which recalled its ambassadors from the three capitals.

Speaking at the al-Aqsa compound, known to Jews as Temple Mount, Israeli nationalist politician and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said the European countries that announced they will recognize a Palestinian state are "giving a prize to murderers."

He also said that Israel must control the site and that it should go 'all the way' with its operation in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip to uproot Hamas and bring back hostages.

Around 144 out of 193 member-states of the United Nations recognise Palestine as a state.

The move by the three European countries was the latest example of Israel's increasing international isolation, both over the civilian casualties resulting from its tactics in the Gaza war, as well as its over longstanding policies such as building Jewish settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
