Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of José Martí, Santiago De Cuba

Marti is a Cuban national hero. He was a poet, journalist, and revolutionary philosopher (and Freemason - as many of the people in this cemetery) . His writings spoke to Cuba’s independence from Spain, as well as US expansionism into Cuba.

His tomb is the most elaborate in the Cemetery. We were lucky enough to witness the “Changing of the Guard”, an elaborate and precisely choreographed military drill. The drill originated with peacetime and battlefield military drills introduced to enhance unit cohesion and effectiveness in the 17th century. Guards are changed every half hour according to the ringing of the clock tower bells. Read about our whole Cuba Experience here: http://travellikeanarchitect.com/fathom-not-grandmothers-cruise/
