Elvis Presley: the Jaycee's Speech 1971
On 16th January 1971, Elvis Presley did something very unusual: he gave a speech.
He had received a prestigious award as one of the Jaycee's Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Year and offered a moving one minute precis of his approach to life, using an old Roy Hamilton hit, "Without A Song", as his theme.
It was almost made up on the spot, and there are occasional stumbles, but this may be the most profound and beautiful sixty seconds of his entire career.
The other nine award recipients were politicians and worthy leaders but none commanded the floor nor captivated the audience like the poor boy from Tupelo who had changed the cultural world when he was just twenty-one.
