Ajay Dwivedi, Expert Faculty at Drishti IAS, presents this session focusing on the evolving India–Iran relations in the backdrop of recent global tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
In this lecture, we begin by understanding the origin of the name Iran (Persia) and its historical evolution. The session then explores the religious transformation of Iran, including Zoroastrianism (Ahura Mazda, Avesta) and the later dominance of Islam (Shia sect). A brief yet structured overview of Iranian history is covered—from ancient civilizations and the Achaemenid Empire (Cyrus the Great, Darius) to the Islamic conquest, Safavid dynasty, and the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Finally, the lecture connects these historical and cultural aspects to analyze India–Iran relations, highlighting their importance for UPSC Prelims and Mains, as well as for understanding contemporary international relations.
