How to install and commission Virtus differential pressure controller AFP 2/VFG 22(1)
Watch installation and commissioning video animation of Virtus, new differential pressure controllers for district heating and cooling from Danfoss.
A new generation of intelligent ready pressure and flow controllers, named Virtus, will change the way district energy networks are balanced and optimized. New chamber balanced design of pressure and flow controllers means high durability and improved functionality and performance. In addition, unique intelligent optimization functions iNET and iSET will save even more energy.
Optimal hydronic balance and perfect temperature control is the key to maximizing efficiency of heating and cooling networks. With that it also means that you are saving energy, money and improving end-users’ comfort. To help achieve your goals, Danfoss developed a new range of heavy duty differential pressure and flow controllers for most demanding district heating and cooling applications, named Virtus.
There are plenty of reasons to choose Virtus, here are just some of them:
• Perfect control and stability
• Optimization of network performance
• Big flow capacities
• Compact size
• Easy installation, commissioning and maintenance

3 key innovations inside one Virtus:
Intelligent network balancing with iNET: pumping cost reduction and peak load management
iNET is a real-time alignment of heat production and distribution according to continually changing heat consumption. Changing heat consumption requires changes in heat distribution. Therefore, the Δp should be optimized at each branch. iNET detects the pressure drop needed in each building and remotely adjusts it. This results in lower pumping costs. In addition, remotely controlled controllers also mean easier work for the operator.
The iNET solution is also important as district heating systems are becoming increasingly complex, meaning that critical points are shifting. With iNET, such problems will be automatically resolved.
Intelligent substation efficiency optimization with iSET: no oscillation and reduced pumping costs
iSET eliminates the temperature fluctuation in buildings connected to a district energy network. iSET function implemented in differential pressure controllers optimizes the operation of district heating or cooling substations. The iSET innovation is based on the finding that the stability of the district heating system and pressure regulation are linked, which means that the system of district heating can be stabilized by changing the pressure setting. The solution automatically detects the oscillation and eliminates it without the interference of operators who would otherwise make changes manually. The solution calculates what the pressure difference setting must be and changes the electronic settings to open or close the valve. In the end, the controlled temperature will not oscillate and this results in reduced operation costs and improved system efficiency.
Dynamic damping
Dynamic damping is a non-electronic solution that adapts the amount of water that can enter the pressure controller. This eliminates pressure oscillations that can occur if, for example, several similar applications are associated with thin pipelines. Such valves affect one another and can achieve resonance.
