A surprise trip to Venice Florida wasn't what she was expecting

Mike and Miha visit Venice Florida and fall in love with this Gulf Coast community. Venice has been on Miha's bucket list for as long as I've known her, so I thought I would surprise her with a visit, unfortunately, she meant Venice, Italy, not Venice Florida. Come to find out, Venice FL is an amazing place just south of Sarasota and became one of our favorite Florida Beach destinations. As a matter of fact, we road tripped all over Florida, from St. Augustine, all the way to the Florida Keys, and back up the Gulf Coast...Venice really left an indelible mark on our traveling souls.

If you're not familiar with Venice Florida, you're not alone. Venice is a city in Sarasota County. The city includes what locals call "Venice Island," a portion of the mainland that is accessed via bridges over the artificially created Intracoastal Waterway. The city is located south of Nokomis and north of Englewood. The city is well known as a winter haven for snowbird's and was voted one of the 10 Happiest Seaside Towns in the country by Coastal Living.

Venice is located along Florida’s white-sanded Gulf Coast, which has more than 14 miles of beaches and plenty of recreational opportunities, including swimming, sunbathing, fishing and boating. Shelling is also a favorite pastime in Venice as fossilized shark's teeth can be found in abundance by sifting through the sand. Venice also has some great golf courses. Venice is also a Florida Main Street City – its downtown graced by northern Italian architecture and beautifully landscaped boulevards that date to the original city plans of 1925 and reminiscent of the Italian city of Venice whose name it borrowed.

Miha and I both highly recommend visiting Venice Florida, it's one of the best coastal communities we've visited in the U.S. We never had to search for beach parking, the beaches themselves are expansive, and, there is always a surprise waiting for you, like the drum circle we encountered on our last night in town.

If you're an RV'er like us, the Royal Coachman RV Resort (an Encore Thousand Trails property) is a great place to stay, just a couple miles from the beach and located on its own water inlet.
