1982's The Thing, from John Carpenter, is a brilliant work full of suspense and mystery, and has become one of the most recognised triumphs of practical effects thanks to Rob Bottin. The 2011 prequel of the same name is kind of meh, but noticeably lacking are the sfx - what happened?

While the director has to take some responsibility, you can revert to default and blame Hollywood. Amalgamted Dynamics made lots of cool practical effects, but they were mostly replaced or overlayed.
