For the sake of clean water

In Burundi, an investigation of improved water points in rural and urban areas in two provinces revealed worrying levels of bacterial contamination. In half of the cases, water drawn for drinking purposes was found to be unfit for human consumption. The study also showed a serious deterioration of water quality between the point of withdrawal and the point of consumption. In response to these findings, the GIZ Water and Sanitation Sector Programme of Burundi (PROSECEAU) decided to intervene at two levels: activities to protect water catchments were paired with the promotion of behavioural changes in basic sanitation and hygiene at household level, with a focus on capacity building of local actors. This short film introduces some of the highlights of PROSECEAU’s involvement in Burundi from 2016 to 2020 to improve the quality of drinking water, giving a voice to institutional partners, beneficiary households and other development agents.
