”When can I have spicy food again?” 🌶️🔥 It's a question I get a lot as a surgeon in Texas. As a spice enthusiast myself, let’s talk about it:

🌶️Do I have to avoid spicy food forever?
No, there’s no food that I consider off limits, as long as you’re eating it in moderation and listening to your body. However, you do need to wait a while after surgery before trying anything spicy.

🌶️How long should I wait after surgery?
I tell my patients to wait at least a month. If you were already sensitive to spice before surgery, give it some extra time so your stomach can heal from the procedure.

🌶️What happens if I eat too much spicy food?
If you go too hard with spice before your body is ready, you could get nauseous or throw up, which can potentially cause damage to your stomach, so it's best to play it safe.

🌶️Tips for Trying Spicy Food Again:
Take it slow and eat a very small amount at a time. Pay attention to how your body reacts. If it goes poorly, wait a while before trying again. When things get too spicy, drink a glass of milk.
