Behavioral Interventions to Redjuce Prejudice

Now that we’ve discussed what individuals can do to cope with stigma, let’s shift our attention more globally to the ways in which we can reduce prejudice in our society. In this video, we’ll discuss behavioral interventions that can be used to reduce prejudice, and in our next we’ll discuss cognitive ones.

Contact Hypothesis: Contact with socially-different others should break down stereotypes and prejudicial feelings of uncertainty, fear, or judgment; the focus of Intergroup Contact Theory.

Typicality: Being seen as a “typical” or representative member of a group.

Indirect Intergroup Contact: Virtual contact with a member of a different group via observation.

Imagined Intergroup Contact: Virtual contact with a member of a different group via imagination or remembering.

Intergroup Contact Theory: Proposes that intergroup contact is effective (e.g., at reducing prejudice) because it lessens our reliance on social categories and stereotypes.
