Does an accountant or tax specialist need the CPA license to succeed? #cpalife #cpagoals #accounting
Should an accountant or tax professional have a CPA license?
I get this question all the time.
Usually from young accountants who are frustrated, burned out, or wondering if the sacrifice is even worth it.
And honestly…
I understand the question.
→ “Why study for an exam I may never fully use?”
→ “There are partners at firms without a CPA.”
→ “Clients don’t even know the difference.”
→ “Do people really care?”
Here’s my answer:
Yes.
You should still go get it.
Not because the letters magically make you smarter.
But because it tells the world something important about you.
It says:
→ You committed to something difficult
→ You stayed disciplined
→ You were willing to delay gratification
→ You finished what you started
That matters.
A CPA license is one of the few state-recognized credentials that instantly creates credibility.
Even before you say a word.
And whether people admit it or not…
When I’m hiring?
If I see two candidates with similar experience and one is a CPA and the other isn’t…
I immediately assume the CPA is more serious about their career.
Fair or unfair — that’s reality.
And there’s another part nobody talks about enough:
You feel different about yourself after earning it.
Your confidence changes.
You stop looking at hard things as impossible.
Because now you have proof that you can survive difficult seasons and come out stronger on the other side.
I’ve seen too many talented people put the exam off “temporarily.”
Then life happens.
→ Kids
→ Bills
→ Exhaustion
→ Comfort
→ Fear of failing again
And slowly…
They stop pushing themselves professionally too.
Many end up stuck in jobs they hate because somewhere along the way they convinced themselves they couldn’t do hard things anymore.
That’s the real danger.
Not failing the CPA exam.
Giving up on yourself.
And for the record…
Passing wasn’t easy for me either.
I failed sections.
I had to retake exams.
I sacrificed income and basically put life on pause for a while to get through it.
But I’m extremely grateful I did it.
Because the license opened doors…
But more importantly, it changed the way I viewed myself.
So if you’re young in your career — go get it.
And if you’re older and still thinking about it?
Go get it anyway.
People pass this exam while raising kids, running businesses, and working full-time jobs.
You absolutely can too.
The CPA isn’t just a license.
It’s a signal.
To clients.
To employers.
And most importantly… to yourself.
Will you get the CPA license now?
