London Mudlarking: 2000 Years of History in Objects, and a Crow
This is my fourth mudlarking video and shows a mudlarker's eye view as I discover various objects that can be found on the banks of the Thames, from common finds to slightly more unusual ones. Sometimes I bring a small camera with me and over a few months I get some footage to show.
If you want to try mudlarking then here is some important advice:
- Anyone wishing to search the tidal Thames foreshore in any way for any reason must hold a current foreshore permit from the Port of London Authority (PLA). Day passes can be applied for.

- Be safe. Mudlarking is quite safe if you are aware of your environment. Make sure you know what time the tides are that day. Be sure you know at all times where to exit the beach, the tide can come in quickly. Make sure people know where you are and bring a mobile phone, it's possible to get stuck, bring a friend if possible.
- A few areas are out of bounds for everyone but there are plenty of accessible places (via steps) to visit. Maps can be found here: https://www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tha...
- If you find anything important it should be reported to a Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme (contact the Museum of London). If you're unsure you could post a photo on a forum and ask for advice. The River Thames Mudlarking Finds Facebook page is good for this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/74196...
- Bring some good shoes, Wellington boots if possible. You'll probably want a bag too in case you find anything.
- rubber gloves are a good idea as there is the possibility of contracting diseases from the water.
- Be aware you often won't find anything so just enjoy being by the river!
A great place to learn more, from the law surrounding mudlarking and what you might find, is the London Mudlark's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LondonMudlark/
