Cool Volcano Science Experiment with Vinegar and Baking Soda
Erupting volcano science experiment is such a classic and a great one to support teaching in chemical reactions. Now we show you just how you can do it yourself, in the comfort of your own home and with recycled materials.
⭕ Materials:
For the Volcano
- Cardboard
- Water bottle
- Tape
- PVA glue (1 part)
- Water (5 parts)
- Paper
- Paint and brushes
For the Lava
- Bottle
- Funnel
- Washing up liquid (1 tbsp)
- Red food colouring
- Vinegar (½ cup)
- Baking soda (½ cup)
- Tray
⭕ Instructions:
(1) Firstly, start by taping some cardboard around the sides of the water bottle
(2) When you have your volcano shape, then mix 1 part PVA glue with 5 parts water.
(3) Next, tear some recycled paper. Dip it into the glue mixture and attach each strip to the volcano
(4) Once your paper mache volcano is dry, use different reds, greys, browns and blacks to paint it.
(5) While leaving it to dry, take an empty bottle and gently mix washing up liquid with red food colouring and vinegar.
(6) Then add baking soda to the water bottle that is inside our volcano.
(7) Pour in your lava mixture and watch the volcano erupt!
