What is Scalable Link Interface (SLI)?

Although there are compatibility concerns, associated with running multiple GPU setups, SLI will allow the use of two to four cards at once

This technology was first used by the company 3dfx on their Voodoo2 graphics card line in 1998, but later the company was bought by Nvidia and the technology was shelved for a while.

In 2004, Nvidia re-released SLI with updates to allow it to work with then-current technology of PCIe buses.

What is Crossfire?

Previously called CrossFire, AMD CrossFireX (as it is called today), refers to a brand name for the multi-GPU system by Advanced Micro Devices which was in fact originally developed by ATI. Today, up to four GPUs can be used on a single computer, with the possibility of enhancing graphics performance by up to 4X that of just one GPU.

Update: AMD has officially ended its brand CrossFire for multi-GPU configurations. Now it will be called multi-GPU or mGPU and just like Nvidia, newer graphics cards from AMD will only support a 2-way multi-GPU setup. This is applicable from AMD’s latest Radeon RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 graphics cards.

SLI Supported Motherboard

The other major requirement of SLI is the SLI enabled motherboard. A motherboard that supports SLI comes with two or more (up to 4) PCI Express x16 slots and it is specified on their product detail / manual or on their web page that it is SLI Ready or SLI Certified. This is because all motherboards having multiple PCI-Express x16 slots do not support SLI. Some motherboard supports SLI, some CrossFire (AMD multi-GPU technology) and some can support both SLI and CrossFire. Most of the Z series motherboards support SLI.
