In the Grimm version, the Devil fails because the girl remains morally “pure” despite her mutilation. The story flips power on its head: innocence isn’t weakness, it’s armor. Even more brutal—the father is never punished by magic. He has to live with what he chose. Consequences are psychological, not supernatural.
