Propagate Japanese Maple from Cuttings (Step by step)

In this video, I will show you how to choose the right cuttings to use and how to propagate Japanese maple from cuttings, step by step.

In general, it's not easy to propagate Japanese maple from cuttings. However, you will get a bunch of cuttings from your late Spring pruning - why not try propagating them, instead of just throwing them away? If it works, it's pretty amazing and rewarding!

Some key tips:
1. Use healthy shoots (not too young but not hard wood)
2. Make a cut right below the leaves are originating from. Use clean scissors.
3. Dip cuttings in water for several hours (add root booster if you have one)
4. Use rooting hormone like Clonex or powdered one
5. Use clean Akadama or Kanuma for soil if possible. If not, a mix of bark and peat moss works too.
6. Keep the soil moist and keep them under partial shade
7. Protect them from winds. Minimize cuttings from moving. Use U-shaped wires to stabilize them
8. Be patient. If leaves stay intact, that's good but dont keep checking and moving the cuttings. Wait till next spring if you have to. If the cuttings produce new leaves, that's good news!

I heard Kanuma soil produces better results, may be due to acidity that may provide protection against bacteria in the soil. I will try using Kanuma soil and show the video on that soon.
