World sled dog Dryland Championships

Sleddog racing is normally associated with snow-covered landscapes, yet it was the UK that hosted this year’s 2019 WSA (World Sleddog Association) Dryland World Championships. Ironically, this form of ‘dry-land mushing’ was made treacherous by the muddy conditions after the unseasonable amount of rainfall.

Teams of dogs, their owners, drivers, and trainers congregated at the stunning Firle Country Estate in the midst of the South Downs in East Sussex. Entrants travelled to the event from across Europe, but the safety and welfare of the dogs and the drivers are paramount. Despite the kudos of a World Championship, there is no prize money, and vets and animal welfare charities are in attendance to ensure that the welfare of the dogs is centre stage.
