Steve Smith & Vital Information Recording “A Prayer For The Generations – Part 2

"A Prayer For The Generations – Part 2” starts with a tempo and groove established by bassist Janek Gwizdala. Keyboardist Manuel Valera comes in right away with a moody synth sound and it takes me a few bars to decide how to approach the piece. I ease into a groove while George Garzone waits for his entrance and plays in a slower pulse than Janek and me.

The tempo and openness of the piece left me a lot of room for melodic tom fills and resolution points that don’t always land on “1.” Manuel’s distorted Rhodes sound toward the end is a highlight and reminds of something Joe Zawinul might have played in an early incarnation of Weather Report.
