Table tennis might have started as a genteel, after-dinner game, during the late 1800s in England, but a lot has changed since then, including its Olympic debut at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.

Now the sport is a much faster paced game - with the ball travelling at speed around 144 kilometres per hour (about 90 miles per hour) - which requires not only speed and agility, but also precision, concentration and being calm under pressure.

Despite a few victories from the Republic of Korea and Sweden, China has been a clear dominant powerhouse in the table tennis Olympic history.
