The Future of Exoplanet Science Missions — From Smallsats to the HWO Flagship

The next two decades of exoplanet science will be shaped by a diverse range of missions, from focused small satellites to a broadly capable flagship observatory. Small and medium-sized missions—such as the NASA-funded SPARCS (Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat), the EVE (Early eVolution Explorer) NASA SMEX concept, and other emerging ideas—are driving innovation through multi-wavelength, high-cadence stellar monitoring, exoplanet detection and characterization, technology development, and the training of future mission leaders. Smaller missions also lay the foundation for the upcoming flagship mission, the Habitable Worlds Observatory. By thinking small, we pave the way for thinking big, ensuring the next generation of exoplanet science is both ambitious and achievable.
