🌌 The Scale of Our Universe: Milky Way vs. Andromeda
The vastness of space is mind-boggling! Here are the incredible distances from our home galaxy, the Milky Way:
Size of the Milky Way: Our galaxy spans about 100,000 to 120,000 light-years across. To put that in perspective, one light-year is roughly 9.46 trillion kilometers!
Distance to Andromeda (M31): Our nearest major galactic neighbor is located about 2.5 million light-years away. Even though it's "close" in cosmic terms, we are actually on a collision course and will merge in about 4.5 billion years.
Distance to Messier 72 (M72): This globular cluster (not a galaxy itself, but a dense group of stars) is located much further out in the halo of our galaxy, approximately 55,000 to 60,000 light-years away from Earth.
