What Is An African Cape Vs Other Parrots
I love my African Capes -
My husband and I were just commenting on how African Capes are VERY different than most other parrots. Part of this is physical, they have large beaks and heads and they are hefty. Another part of it is in their diet (which corresponds to that huge beak) and their behavior.
All parrots need time, love, -a chef- to cut up their fresh veggies daily, and stimulation (like enrichment). When it comes to African Capes, it all applies, but Capes require even more attention! I often feel like Macey is uncomfortable or insecure if I'm not around. She just wants to be near me, on me, petted by me and adored :) 🦜
Stimulation Or Mutalation!
I've also heard several times and been told by my mentor that African Capes have to have enrichment or things to occupy their beaks and minds! All parrots need a purpose - my Parrotlet breeders busy themselves with being parents, but I still give them as much in their cages as I can - wood toys or wooden branches to chew and chip away at is a favorite. Pet parrots also need to either be mentally challenged with tasks or tricks, which is great for developing a common "language" or way to communicate and connect with your pet parrot. They also need toys or enrichment, something for them to do. I have been told that Macaws need to have wood to chew, otherwise they get stressed out. This makes sense to me because their beaks are quite strong - the Macaw's but other parrots too. In nature they would constantly be biting on wood to form a nest or to mark their territory. They also chew on wood to eat the bark - so it seems like a natural need. Unfortunately, they chip through the toys they like quickly!
