On this day in 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot while attending a play at Ford’s theatre. The assassin—John Wilkes Booth—struck from behind. Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen House. The next morning, he passed away, becoming the first U.S. President to be assassinated.
