How to Have Awkward Conversations with your Host Family

Whether you're talking about money, the hours you're working, disciple or leaving, there are many awkward conversations you're going to face.

But, we have a few tips! If you make sure to follow these, then we can't guarantee you won't face any awkward moments but we're sure the pain will be slightly lessened.

1. Choose your moment! This means not asking for your monthly pay as soon as your host parent gets home. Try to avoid any serious conversations while a host parent is stressed or with the kids.

2. Send a text or email first if your host parents are always busy to ask for some time to chat. Giving them a heads up can help!

3. Speak up! You are doing a job - you need to get paid. Your host parents will most likely be mortified they forgot to pay you!

4. Keep your receipts. If you can't keep a receipt, then simply make a detailed note about how much you're owed. This way, asking for your host parent to repay you shouldn't be awkward. They owe you!

5. Speak about discipline as soon as possible. Learn your host parent's rules and then carve your own out together. Hopefully they'll support you from the off!
