Where Do Asteroids And When They Came From!

What Are Asteroids:

Facts: Asteroids are ancient space rocks left over from the formation of our solar system roughly 4.6 billion years ago. They are leftover building materials from the cloud of gas and dust that created the Sun and planets. Most originate from the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter.

When They Were Formed 4.6 Billion Years Ago: Asteroids formed at the exact same time as the rest of the solar system.

Cosmic Fossils: When the early Sun was forming, gravitational forces pulled dust and rock together to create planets. Asteroids are the primordial chunks that never coalesced into a full-sized planet or moon.

Where They Came From

The Main Asteroid Belt: Most known asteroids (over a million) live in this region, located 2 to 4 Astronomical Units (AU) from the Sun, between Mars and Jupiter.

Why the Belt Exists: Jupiter's intense gravitational pull prevented the debris in this region from coming together to form a planet.

Other Origins: Some asteroids have been tossed out of the main belt due to planetary gravity or collisions, becoming Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). Others exist farther out in the solar system, such as the Kuiper Belt.
