Sometimes shooting outdoors can be a challenging due to the harsh light the sun creates. When you pull out your camera you may surprised how difficult it is to expose it correctly.

When you do not use the exposure settings properly it could render your footage useless and be the difference between a beautiful shot and an useable one.

Its always best to change the lighting rather the the exposure settings in your camera because cameras have optimal settings when they are exposed correctly. When you try to adjust your cameras exposure you start to see artifacts in your footage such as noise and zero motion blur. However when you are outside you can’t control the brightness of the sun but there are mitigating things you can implement to maintain the highest quality image without overexposing the highlights or harsh shadows
Im not going to go into the technical aspects of exposure, just the settings you need to use to optimize your videos. This will be a good base that you can build out from there.

I always turn my camera to manual exposure and start at my base. To get my base I start with what FPS my shot will be in and build out from there.
Using the 180 degree rule I turn my shutter to 1/50th as the 180 rule states to double your shutter to your frame rate. Since 1/48 is not an option 1/50 will do. Now that I have my FPS and shutter set I turn to my aperture.

Next I will change my aperture AKA F-stop.
This all depends on what type of background I want. Most of the time I like a blurry background because it really brings the subject forward and makes them the point of focus. This can be done by taking the aperture down to its lowest setting. If I wanted a longer depth of field then I would raise the
aperture higher.

Also note that you can only lower the aperture as low as your lens will allow. Some lenses have lower f-stops than others. With this Tamron 17-28 I can get the F-stop down to 2.8 and that really makes a nice blurry background. A rule to follow is the closer your subject is to the lease of the camera the blurrier your background will be.

After I am done with my FPS, shutter and F-stop I turn to the ISO. Since we are shooting outdoors I will leave my ISO as low as it can go generally 100 on most cameras.

Now that we have the camera settings inside the camera set to the optimal base we can work out from there.

As you can see the picture is to overexposed and most people might just crank up there shutter speed or increase the f-stop to darken up the picture.

To be clear, both of these are options but they come with consequences. If i am in a pinch I may add a little F-stop and Shutter equally until
Im perfectly exposed but this is not ideal.

When you increase the F-stop you lose that blurry background and when you Increase the shutter the video will not look as natural due to the lack of motion blur.

So a great alternative is to use a variable ND filter which will work almost like sunglasses for your camera while maintaining all the proper exposure settings. I am using the Gobe Variable ND filter but you can use
any filter you want from amazon.

When I add this ND filter to my lens it allows me to maintain
that blurry backgrounds depth of field by giving me the
the equivalent of aperture f15.
The best composition you can give to your subject is have them facing the sun with the diffuser shading their face. This will act as not only a shade
so your subject doesn’t squint but it will diffuse the harsh light
from the sun to soften it up and create that nice cinematic video.
